Hysterectomy Q & A

What is a hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure that removes your uterus. Your surgical expert at Elite OB/GYN may also remove your ovaries and fallopian tubes during a hysterectomy. After the procedure, you will no longer menstruate and no longer be able to have children.

Why would I need a hysterectomy?

Your specialist at Elite OB/GYN may suggest a hysterectomy as a treatment for a gynecological condition. Common health conditions that may be treated with a hysterectomy include:

  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine cancer
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Uterine prolapse

Dr. Mehta and Dr. Kushlak know that a hysterectomy is a life-altering surgical procedure and review all of your options for managing your condition and help you determine if a hysterectomy is the best choice.

What are the different types of hysterectomies?

Dr. Mehta and Dr. Kushlak are surgical experts that can perform hysterectomies using a variety of techniques. Some common techniques include:

Open hysterectomy

Also called an abdominal hysterectomy, during an open hysterectomy your surgeon makes an incision in your abdomen to access your uterus and remove it.

Laparoscopic hysterectomy

During a laparoscopic hysterectomy, your surgeon uses a laparoscope, which is a surgical camera, that gets inserted into your abdomen through a tiny incision. Then through one or two more tiny incisions, surgically removes your uterus. A laparoscopic hysterectomy usually results in a shorter recovery than an open hysterectomy.

Vaginal hysterectomy

During a vaginal hysterectomy, your surgeon removes your uterus through a small cut in your vagina.

Your surgical expert at Elite OB/GYN may conduct an ultrasound to help determine the best procedure for you. The ultrasound also helps your surgeon map out the procedure by providing information about the size and location of your uterus.

What is a robotic hysterectomy?

The specialists at Elite OB/GYN also offer a robotic hysterectomy using the da Vinci® Surgical System, which uses a robotic arm to perform the procedure. Like a laparoscopic hysterectomy, the robotic surgical procedure makes very tiny incisions for a faster recovery. The robotic arm also makes the incision and removal of your uterus more precise to reduce risk.
